Chinese New Year at ISA Science City

ALESSANDRO FERRARESE  |  MAY 8, 2024

At ISA Science City International School, we anticipated and celebrated Chinese New Year, a joyous occasion that represents the richness of our multicultural environment. The annual event brought together students from different backgrounds to celebrate and embrace Chinese traditions, fostering a spirit of unity and understanding of multiculturalism.

As the Chinese New Year approached, our school was full of vibrant decorations symbolising luck, prosperity, and happiness. Lanterns and Chinese symbols are hung up to enhance this atmosphere.

The highlight of the Chinese New Year celebration was the lion and dragon dance performances. Throughout the process of rehearsing, as well as watching these traditional celebrations, students were able to acquire a better understanding of Chinese culture. These performances were not only intended to entertain but also educate, allowing students to learn from one another and experience different cultural practices themselves.

In addition to the captivating performances, the interactive workshops provided the students with hands-on experiences in various aspects of Chinese culture. From calligraphy and lantern making to paper cutting and fireworks, these activities encouraged us to actively engage and appreciate China’s rich heritage and traditions. Through these workshops, I believe that our students developed a greater respect for cultural diversity and gained insights into the lives and traditions of their peers. We also had workshops on Korean and other cultures, giving us a more diverse cultural understanding and appreciation of the differing cultural backgrounds at our school

The celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year at ISA this year has also served as a reminder of recycling and sustainably celebrating culture. Many of the workshops at the festival demonstrated sustainable practices. For instance, we made firecrackers with recycled materials and made vegetable dumplings and we learned that we should respect the culture, as well as nature.

The celebration of Chinese New Year in our international school was a testament to our commitment to embrace cultural diversity and create an inclusive environment. It served as a reminder of the importance of understanding, appreciating, and celebrating the various traditions and customs that enriched our school community. By coming together to commemorate this auspicious occasion, we built bridges of understanding, promoted unity, and cultivated a global mindset that prepared our students for a future in an interconnected world.
