NARRATIVE

Embracing Challenges and
Finding Joy in Sports

TERESA CUI |  NOV 15, 2023

My name is Teresa from Grade 9, and this is the ninth year of my being a member of the ISA community. Before coming to ISA Science City, I spent five years in ISA Tianhe— By joining several competitions, I gradually developed my sports interests.

When I was small, I had a poor body, so it was easy for me to get ill—I nearly went to the nurse every week. Due to my poor body condition, I didn’t play many sports other than in PHE classes in school, until in 3rd grade my mum decided to train my body by playing tennis each week. The problems were obvious: My vital capacity and my fitness…So the number of classes I turned up was three times a week. My body improved a lot after a period of time, I ate more, my body became healthier, and I started to participate in more sports activities in school, including some small competitions.

My passion for sports grew when I turned to grade five. My friends and I would spend hours on the field every day, and when I moved on to secondary, I participated in distinct teams such as football, basketball, badminton, and volleyball. Out of all the sports I tried, my favourite sport is volleyball. Honestly, at first, I wasn’t interested in volleyball and disliked it. (Because it hurts!) But over time, I started practising on my own and it became a daily habit. I continued joining the volleyball team every year and became the captain in 8th grade. I recently participated in the ISASC volleyball team for both HS and Junior Varsity teams. Although playing volleyball brings me joy, it also comes with challenges. There were times when my basic volleyball skills were very unstable, and the impact on my arms made me impatient. I used to perform badly in matches and practices which made me lose confidence, but challenges also brought growth. What I did was go for more practice.

Currently, I face the challenge of being both a setter and captain for the junior varsity team, as well as a liber in the high school team. My setting skill is not great, which has been a source of recent stress. However, looking at it from another perspective, having the opportunity to play against different teams helped me to improve and set goals for the future. I really enjoy being a member of HS and for JV: Getting along with friends, having the opportunities to participate in competitions, and playing in spare time helped me to overcome challenges with joy. Sports are now an important part of me, and I am looking forward to continuing to improve and staying connected to sports in the future~!
